Common sense tells us to avoid visits to the doctor when they are not really necessary. Yet there are important symptoms for which a doctor should be consulted. The following are some symptoms to check out without delay.

Headaches with blurred vision or nausea
Easy bruising
Bleeding gums
Persistent thirst
Chronic cough
Persistent sore throat or trouble swallowing
Coughing or vomiting blood
Chest pressure, shortness of breath
Chest pain that radiates to the neck, shoulder, or arm
Breast lumps
Any unexplained lump or swelling
Change in a mole
Unexplained itching
Recurring chills, sweating, or fever
Insomnia or fatigue
Unexplained severe weight loss or gain
Abdominal pain 2 to 3 hours after meals
Severe depression
Loss of motor function, numbness
